Many thanks to Craig and Lorna Robertson
for hosting the Winter Solstice Double Century on December 15th,
2001. A great trip from the Robertson home in Los Altos to the
Pinnacles National Monument south of Gilroy. This year's ride was
bright and sunny, but cold. We joked that, since the
temperatures seemed to actually go down as the sun came up on ride day,
they should go up when the sun went down? No such luck. The
ride stayed cold all day long, and got colder still when darkness
fell. However, we were treated to great scenery,
relatively little traffic, and the camaraderie of a small group of
fellow riders crazy enough to ride 205 miles on the (almost) shortest
day of the year.
After the ride, the Robertsons opened their home for a great post-ride carbo-reloading session. A great finish to a year of double centuries! Craig, by the way, is a big Campy fan. His stable includes a Campy Record-equipped tandem and a Campagnolo-equipped mountain bike.
