December 22, 2006--Our
regular perusal of Bicycle Retailer and Industry News (a
publication, by the way, that we have to get through back
channels--they won't send it to us) came up with two items of
interest to Campagnoscenti:
--First
of all the Italian Trade
Commission (the folks who bring you Campagnolo and some
other Italian-made stuff) has named Paola
Bellusci to head up their California branch. Paola is
the first female Trade Commissioner at the group's Los Angeles
office. Her goal, as quoted in BRAIN, "is to strengthen the
image of my country, not only as a world leader of beauty, reflected
in art and in the manufacturing of traditional consumer
goods--fashion, shoes, etc. I want to emphasize that we are
also a supplier of items characterized by unique design, such as bicycles,
and special crafts." Nice to see she snuck
"bicycles" in there, right ahead of special
crafts.
--Meanwhile,
that "S" company, the one we have derided here for being
at its heart a maker of fishing reels, has named a new president of
Shimano American Corp. That person is David
Pfeiffer, and we are not kidding about his roots ...
he was formerly the vice president of the fishing tackle division
(really, we are not making this up). Said David in BRAIN,
"I've been finding a lot of issues with customers and
distributors are very similar." Campy Only wonders how
long it will be before ShimaNO offers shifter cables made of
monofilament line ... or maybe ten-speed fishing reels. P.S.
Yes, that's a picture of David ... fishing. Not a bike in
sight.

November 2, 2006--Is
the end in sight for ProFit pedals? A
Campy rep let slip to one of our readers that Campagnolo will no
longer offer their house brand pedals. Stiff competition from
Look's new "Keo" pedals was blamed for the decision.
It may be time to stock up on new pedals, but Campagnolo's
reputation for stocking parts should mean that we'll have plenty of
spare cleats ...
November 1, 2006--What's
Italian for "Campy Only"? How about TuttoCampagnolo?

October 22, 2006--Reader
Gary Mitchell sent these photos of his self-installation of
the new Record Ultra Torque crankset. His take on the
crankset: "UNBELIEVABLE. Super responsive, the cranks feel
balanced and stable where the FSA failed (the FSAs always felt like
they were teeter tottering on the cups). And it the looks are
unmatched as always."

September 17, 2006--Several
readers have pointed out that our September 7 rumor about Ergo
levers is not entirely correct. Record and Chorus have new
internals, while Centaur, Veloce, Mirage, and Xenon now share the
same insides.
September
14, 2006--Watch the entire Ultra Torque video, and you'll find
that it wraps up with advice to use the new crankset and win more
races. To make that point, they show several winners crossing
the finish line. Great footage, but as near as we can tell the
last sequence was shot at the 2005 Tour de France, long before Ultra
Torque existed ... Take a look and email

August
5, 2006--We are sad to announce that wildfires in Montana, the
new home of Campy Only sponsor Branford Bike, have destroyed
both Branford Bike and the home of owner Tim Brockett (along with
several other homes). The good news is that nobody was
injured.
Tim tells Campy Only that he will rebuild his home, but his
inventory was a total loss and he had decided not to reopen.
This is a real loss for Campagnolo fans. Tim has a long
history with Campagnolo and could always be counted on for
knowledgeable customer service and a deep, deep spare parts
inventory.
As of today, Branford Bike's web site is still up, but phone service
is down and they are no longer taking orders.
Tim and Branford Bike have been with Campy Only for more than ten
years. He is a good friend, and we wish him well as he works
to overcome this tragic event.
August
5, 2006--Tour de France winner Floyd Landis' "B"
sample test results have come back, and they weren't good: synthetic
testorone and elevated levels. Well, there's still some good
news to be had ... Second place finisher Oscar Pereiro was
Campy-equipped. So, regardless of Floyd's outcome, Campagnolo
has ended their long Tour victory drought.
July
28, 2006--OK, so we're a little late in mentioning this, but
tears were blurring our vision and getting on the keyboard.
Campagnolo's 7-year losing streak at the Tour de France has been

"Ultra Torque" Xenon crankset. Cyclingnews points out
(correctly) that Campagnolo is departing from past practice by
deploying the new design in several gruppos, instead of offering a

years. Cyclingnews' page is here

"I
just had my hands on 2007 Campy Prototypes. Unfortunately with the Rep
present, photos were not an option. Here's what I can tell you from
what I can remember: ID of the BB spindle at the crank arm is a
massive 25mm. This tapers internally through the Bearing and externally
after the bearing (inside the shell so to speak. I couldn't get an idea
of the diameter of spindle further down (my ring didn't compare to
anything...) The interface in the center has 20 teeth approx. 5mm deep
on each side of the spindle that mesh much like two gears. A hollow
alloy bolt holds the two sides together at 42Nm. I unfortunately didn't
have a magnet handy so I can't tell you if the spindle with alloy or
something else. The cups are separate from the bearing and are sold
separately from the crank. The cups are the same through the range from
Xenon to Record.
The Record cranks have been narrowed and made flat in order to keep the
Q-factor the same as the current crank/bb set up. They're about 10mm
thick at the edges, a small bulge down the center but otherwise flat
and hollow. The most noticeable part is that they're close to 50mm
wide! The explanation given was that whatever is placed inside the
crank before curing the carbon is then sucked out through a small hole
in the back side of the crank (this is then covered by some sort of
sticker on the prototype, I don't know how the production model will
be).
Chorus cranks are nearly identical to Record, however won't be hollow.
Centaur and down go to a forged alloy arm with a concave backside, in a
similar shape from the front as the carbon cranks. Centaur will be
available in black.
Centaur brakes are forged slightly different from Record and Chorus,
with exposed bolts in the center where as Rec/Cho are hidden bolt
forged. they're still nice and round but with hollows in the arms. As
has been said above, similar in idea to ZG, only a lot prettier, as
would be expected from Campy.
Most of the other changes are minor, however I have one change to make
to my previous statements, Chorus will be going to the shifter that
only allows 1 gear change at a time when going to smaller cogs. Record
will remain the only one allowing you to dump as many gears as your
thumb will allow. However, the shifting action on the thumb lever of
the lower units is EXTREMELY shorts and VERY easy so tapping the lever
multiple times for shifts will not be a problem. This new system also
lightens up the levers pretty well and will make for an interesting
dilemma when choosing shifters for a piece by piece build.
US delivery on the higher end parts will be late, Chorus and Record
probably won't see light of day here prior to October. Bianchi will be
delivery bikes with Mirage 10 at the end of this month for most
markets, probably June/July in the states. These are the bikes that
have been photographed and going around on WW forums."
 May
10, 2006--A German-speaking reader pointed out this article at Bike
Sport News that shows a slightly different new bottom bracket
system: Click
here The magazine reports that the new system is
called Ultra-Torque. It's similar to the type of
splined connections used in racing engines, is held together by a
single screw, and sheds 100 grams of weight from the current
crank/bottom bracket setup. Check out the images--the
crankset also features outboard bearings ...
April 28, 2006--More
info about Campagnolo's 2007 lineup is coming
out. Here's the latest scoop, courtesy of Roues Artisanales.
Click
here to read the article at their site.
"Groupsets
The XENON
group is going to be upgraded to 10 speed as the others groups of the
brand.
The CENTAUR
group will see its shifters and its cranks improved to carbon
material. They will certainly be the same as Chorus shifters and
cranks from 2006 or 2005. Group price will be the same as this year.
Brakes
RECORD
brake calipers will be modified in design and weight to be around
250gr the pair. They're said to be looking shaped as a triangle rather
than using the current rounded shape. They should be machined a bit
like M5 brakes. They'll normally still use the front dual pivot and
rear single pivot.
Shifters
Shifters internals from any group should be quite much improved to
reduce the distance needed to upshift from 3 centimeters to 1
centimeters. They'll be named as QS standing for Quick
Shift.
Some rumors tell that only RECORD
and CHORUS shifters will still
keep the current downshift thump button to drop as many gears as
wanted. The others groups will only be able to drop one gear...
Cranksets
In this
first new about Campagnolo 2007, we standed that 2 "L"
shaped parts would fit together in the middle of the bottom bracket,
we now know what Campagnolo will use because it has got patents;
http://v3.espacenet.com/origdoc?IDX=EP1352826&QPN=EP1352826
http://v3.espacenet.com/origdoc?IDX=EP1352824&QPN=EP1352824
http://v3.espacenet.com/origdoc?IDX=EP1350714&QPN=EP1350714
In these patents, click on the "Drawings" tab, you'll have
the most understandable things you have to know."

If the patent drawings reflect what
they plan to build, it appears that Campagnolo is following ShimaNO in
offering hollow crankarms (see the third drawing, above). The
crank assembly system is also slightly different than we reported in
our April 6 rumor (scroll down a bit to see it), but it does also
depart from Campy's use of the square-tapered crankarm.

And yes, that's a Record Pista crankset, which in our opinion is the
nicest single piece of equipment that Campagnolo currently makes ...

April 14, 2006--A
reader pointed out that it's not just FSA ... SRAM is
reported be coming out with a road gruppo as well. Here's a
report from Cyclingnews.com: http://www.cyclingnews.com/tech/?id=2005/news/08-26
The official SRAM site: www.sram.com
April 13, 2006--The
guys over at FSA
are at it again, this time lobbing a big old cannonball over the
deck of Campagnolo's ship ... Cyclingnews.com
is reporting that FSA will introduce an entire road (and mountain)
gruppo. Read
the article at Cyclingnews.com. Here is the text:
It has long been speculated that FSA
would develop a complete drivetrain, including shifters and
derailleurs, but details have been few and far between with little
other than rumor and hearsay to go on. However, FSA’s Ric
Hjertberg offered Cyclingnews some rare information on what lies in
store.
FSA will not only offer a complete 10-speed road drivetrain, but
also a 9-speed off-road one as well. The road kit will include
FSA’s own integrated shift/brake levers of an as-yet undisclosed
configuration, rear derailleur, dual-pivot brake calipers, chain, as
well as the front derailleur, crankset, and bottom bracket
components that they already offer. Newly-devloped mountain bike
components will include front and rear derailleurs, shifters, and
chain.
Hjertberg did not offer up much in the way of details, but he did
mention that the road brakes will resemble those from Mavic (and now
SRAM) with an integrated reinforcing strut. FSA’s new chain design
is said to be a “reinvention” of sorts, to the point where FSA
will likely have to look outside the typical collection of bicycle
chain manufacturers in order to get it produced.
The new drivetrains are a truly international collaboration that
involves engineers and designers from five different countries. The
development crew comprises a hand-selected group and Hjertberg
likens the process to putting something on the big screen. “This
group was put together specifically to work on this project,"
said Hjertberg, "but like a film production, these people may
never work together in this arrangement again.”
Details on the new kit would obviously be nice, but at the very
least, word that there will now be a fourth road component option
and a third mountain bike option is certainly exciting news and we
will report more as soon as information becomes available.
We've reported on FSA's
desire to overtake Campagnolo as the second-largest component
manufacturer ... click here for our

April
6, 2005--No, it's not the new Campagnolo crankset, but a very
close example of the new design. For more: http://www.rouesartisanales.com/article-2041293.html
To quote from that web page (in case it's moved):
"After the firsts Shimano 2007 news, some rumours about Campagnolo
are spreading on the internet.
It is said that Campagnolo cranksets will be totally redesigned for
the next year. They'll use a system similar to Shimano because of
the external bearings but they will be ultra-narrow to lower the
Q-Factor.
The crank/bottom bracket is different than the Shimano in that the
crank is 2 “L” shaped items that fit together mechnically in the
center of the bottom bracket spindle.
Still according to rumours, Campagnolo would be working closely with
FRM and the
first bikes equipped with the new cranksets would already be under
tests on the road.
Negmass
cranksets are using something that may look like what Campagnolo
will be using next year (photo above)
April
5, 2006--You won't find it on Campagnolo's web site, but here is
news about their new OEM wheel (to be offered only as part of a
complete, factory-built bicycle), the Khamsin:
"A new wind is blowing through the Campagnolo G3 wheel
range, the KHAMSIN. This is an entry-level model for both the OEM
market, and for the aftermarket. Campagnolo has been growing
considerably in recent years in the OEM market which now accounts
for 40% of its revenues.
Khamsin wheels have an anodized aluminium rim with a height of 24
mm, machined on the sides and with a wear indicator on the braking
surfaces. The 2 mm spokes are distributed in accordance with the
special Campagnolo G3 geometry, with 24 (8x3) in the front wheel and
27 (9x3) in the rear one. The hubs, also in anodized aluminium,
ride on sealed high-quality bearings.
The freewheel body/pawl carrier is a single body as in the entire
Campagnolo range, and is compatible with Campagnolo and HG
drivetrains.
Khamsin is available in two anodized versions, gold and black.
The weight of the pair is 1,915 g.
The price for the public is about Eur 139 (about $170US)
Khamsin will be available starting from the month of June."
The "Khamsin" name was previously used by Campagnolo
for their entry-level disk wheel.
April 3, 2006--We
were cruising around and found that major search engine search.com
shows Campy Only as the number one listing when
searching for "Campagnolo" (after a few 'sponsored links'
that rank higher because they pay for those positions ...)
Right below us at search.com is the official Campagnolo web
site. Meanwhile, over at Google,
we're still #2, right after the official site.

April
1, 2006--Who needs electronics? Campagnolo is reportedly set
to release a "road" gruppo that seeks to capture part of
the worldwide demand for more low-tech, single-speed cycling. Dubbed
"Pesante," the new gruppo is built around a one-speed
coaster brake hub, and includes a front hub (in steel, like the
rear hub), a set of matching handgrips, and (in a major departure
for Campagnolo) a steel bar and stem combo. A new rim,
"Cavallo del Ferro," is also in the works to go with the
hubs (to be offered in 36h and 48h drillings). The company's
new approach to cycling, according to sources, is code-named
"Entrambe le Estremità," or "both ends of the
market." Campagnolo execs are reportedly hoping to
bulwark the company's lock on high-end components with the
"low-tech" Pesante gruppo, with an ultimate goal of
recapturing a portion of the mountain bike market (a stage in the
marketing plan called "raduno nella metà," or
"meet in the middle"). Campagnolo
is also reported to be working with several Italian framebuilders
to offer similarly low-tech frames to go with the new gruppo.
March 22, 2006--A
reader suggested that we all point our browsers to the U.S. Patent
Office's web site to see Campagnolo's patent for a part of the
electronic shifting system. So, go
here to see it. The patent was awarded in 1997, so
this is something they've been thinking about a lot longer than
ShimaNO (see our March 10 rumor, below)
March
19, 2006--Here's the latest we're hearing about Campy's 2007
Record lineup:
--The crankset will feature an entirely new design (see our
February 24 rumor, below)
--Brake levers will be redesigned to include much shorter
throw
--The brake calipers will be a close copy of Zero Gravity's
superlight design (as shown here)
March 10, 2006--Not
that we care that much about what those S-people are doing,
but Cyclingnews.com has
photos and info on ShimaNO's ongoing attempt at electronic
shifting. Check it out here.
Cyclingnews notes that a common question asked by riders about
electronic shifting is, "Why?" Big dittos over
here. We'll ask once again ... what happens when your
batteries die in the middle of nowhere? And is it so
hard to push an Ergo lever? But when the chance to one-up your
riding buddies is presented, who cares? Our prediction:
Campagnolo will sell every single electronic shifting gruppo they
make, no matter how expensive they are.
March 10, 2006--In
the same Cyclingnews report mentioned above, they note that
ShimaNO's profits are down. Boo hoo.

Come back for posts from our training rides and the event
itself!
February 13, 2006--Reports
from across the pond tell us that alloy Record cranksets are going
for about $135US over there ...
February 11, 2006--We're
hearing reports (again) of deep discounts in Campagnolo cranksets,
leading (again) to speculation about the demise of Campagnolo's
square-taper bottom brackets. See our May
22 rumor ... we've been down this road before, and still no
sign of a new bottom bracket. More likely, according to our sources,
is a need to compete with component maker FSA, who offers
nice equipment at a lower price than Campagnolo.
February 6, 2006--Cruise
on over to the Big Fix
for details on how a $50 investment can snag you Hutchinson tires
for life! One lucky rider will get ten tires a year for 25
years--a total of 250 tires with a value of up to $12,000!
Hutchinson is sponsoring the Big Fix in a big way, and we thank
them. (And while you're at the Big
Fix, click on the "Sponsor a Rider" link and
select Campy Only's Eric Norris.)
