August 6, 2006: Mormon
Emigrant Trail
Mojo and I did a little recon today on Mormon Emigrant Trail--the
fifth annual Tahoe Epic will be going up MET in three weeks. Check
out the elevation profile. Yeah, it's a long, long uphill grind.

Berryessa Estates
Way out on Hwy 128 on the way from Pope Valley to Middletown is a
turnoff to a place called Berryessa Estates. A shot-up, rusted sign says
there's a store there. We have been riding past this turnoff for more
than 20 years and finally decided to ride out and see what's there. It turns out
that some 200 families live in the Estates ... and yes, there is a store.

May 14, 2006: St Helena
Hot weather has finally come to Northern California, but it was
still a great day for a fixed-gear ride from Winters to St Helena.

Double History
With about one month to go to this year's Davis Double, here's a
1979 Bicycling Magazine article, "A Double Dose of Pleasure and
Pain" about Campy Only's hometown double century. The DC was
only a few years old when this article was written, but many of the
names are still familiar: George Mount, Otis Guy, Joe Breeze. Click on
the images below (left to right) to read the article.

April 8, 2006: Monterey

all the way into an unusual headwind. At the end of the ride was an

March 31, 2006: The End of the Madness
Our last ride this month--a morning spin south of Davis. Below, the
sun rises over our top tube, and a "proof of ride" photo with
today's newspaper.
March 30, 2006:
Calistoga Climbing
We rode from St Helena to the top of the climb on Hwy 29 from
Calistoga to Middletown (on our fixed gear). The climb involves mile
after mile of 7% grade, but it felt great.

March 26: 95 miles on a Fixed Gear
Sandy and I left Davis at 6:30 am to ride the Foxy Fall Century
course backwards (on fixed gears). On the way back, we briefly
contemplated climbing Mix Canyon, a hellacious grade out of Pleasants
Valley. We decided not to.

Mojo was supposed to join us for this ride, but came down ill this
morning. Finally, a day of really nice weather--warm temps and no
rain!

March 11, 2006: 200K on Fixed Gears
Four fixie riders: Mojo, Randy, David, and Campy Only's Eric Norris,
rode from Davis to Pope Valley and back on our fixed-gear machines, a
total of 200 kilometers. A cold morning (frost and ice and temps in the
30s) made way for a very nice day later on.

February 16, 2006: A
Visit to Joe Bell's Shop
We visited the San Diego-area workshop of top frame painter (and
Campy Only sponsor) Joe Bell, and left feeling like a big kid in a very
big candy shop. JB paints for many top builders, including Richard Sachs
and Rivendell, and everywhere you look in his workshop are examples of
their work as well as frames from pretty much every famous framebuilder
you ever heard of. For more about Joe Bell: www.joebell.biz

February 5, 2006: Fixie
Frolic to Pope Valley
Campy Only's Eric Norris and our riding buddy Mojo Cosgrove did a
little fixed-gear training for the Big Fix, riding 80 miles (with
5,000 feet of climbing) from Winters to Pope Valley. Mojo's mileage was
a little different--flat problems made it necessary for him to hitch a
ride back most of the way. Where are those darn bike shops when you need
them?

for pedestrian and bicycle traffic!

January 8, 2006: Lake Berryessa Glory Hole Spillway
Big Fix organizer Mojo Cosgrove and Campy Only's Eric Norris did a
little fixed-gear training to the top of Monticello Dam to see the
spillway running. The show was spectacular--several feet of water were
overtopping the spillway (as much as we've seen in nine years of
spillway watching).
