Well . . . another disappointing year for
Campagnolo at the Tour de France. Lance Armstrong once again
carried his ShimaNO-equipped Trek to victory in Paris, despite a very
strong challenge from Campagnolo-using Jan Ullrich. On the bright
side, Campagnolo-equipped bikes were ridden by 12 of 20 stage winners,
and by second-place finish Ullrich and third-place finisher Alexandre
Vinokourov (both of whom also won stages this year).
In fact, the Tour had hardly started when Campy-using rider David Millar was robbed of a stage win by a mechanical problem (his chain fell off the chainring because the team mechanic decided to take off the front derailleur--wonder how long it will be before he does that again). Then there was Ullrich's decision to once again put on a pair of deep-section wheels (Boras?) on the final mountain stage--leading commentators on OLN to suggest that they hurt his ability to descend and, perhaps, cost him precious time. So, like Cubs fans in Chicago, we once again say, "There's always next year!" Here's a summary of which equipment has been on the stage winner's bike each day.
